Woww! I can’t believe that I have almost finished this semester 4. Yet, all the subjects that I’ve learned quite hard and a few subjects are quite okay. So, now I write this entry for Critical Literacy’s blog. This is my last entry for Critical Literacy’s blog. Like I already said I have almost completed this semester 4. It’s mean that I have learned more and know more about this subject. For the first time I learned this subject, I feel it is so hard for me to understand what this subject all about. Most students always said that this is the killer subject in semester 4. Is it true?? Now, I want to share my opinions, comments and suggestions for this subject after I’ve learned about it. As for me this subject seriously critical, but when we understand we know that this subject is not too hard as long as we focus and do what lecturer said. This subject also can make me think advance in making a good decision and lead me to have a good skill in writing and reading. As the course aims for this subject is to enable students to manage the demands of literacy in a critical manner and yes the aims are achieved. From learning this subject I know how texts are constructed and how to critical reading not just only read without knowing anything. Preparations for test in this subject are reading and remember what we read and learn. Not only read but we need to understand what we read to ensure we can answer the question correctly. Critical Literacy subject practiced me to have a good skill in reading and thinking. Nothing impossible if we have superior effort to make this subject the best subject not the killer subject anymore! I also want to throw out the bad perceptions of this subject which only make me feel troubled. This subject actually fun and easy but like I said, if we want to have a good result, we must have triple good effort.

My suggestions to improve this subject are reading more on academic text so that we can make our brain active. It is very important to take note when lecturer giving her lectures because what she said is also important. In other hand, reading more and more to ensure the text can be understand. By reading useful things, our brain will think actively. To make the text of the reading are easy to understand, we can make a group discussion to discuss until all of us get the idea of what the text is all about. Find some friends who can explain to us correctly. Besides, always see our lecturer and consult with her to assure we are in a right track. So, people can improve better in this subject and learn from mistakes before.I will stop here.

Entry 4. Lack of Empathy

Assalamualaikum and Hello everyone!

            

After I complete three entries for this blog, now I write my fourth entry for completing the topic given. Topic for my fourth entry is related to the politic. I am not so eager with this topic because I’m not interested in politic field. I also do not have any good knowledge and experiences in the political field. However, I need to understand what is the topic all about and find information from the article. As for me, I agree with the article and what is written by the writer, Syed Umar Ariff.

The article titled Nik Aziz and Hadi’s lack of empathy. The article is informing us the true nature or behavior of the PAS leaders, Nik Aziz and Hadi about the BR1M. The writer have stated in the article the harsh words used by the leaders of PAS. For me, leaders should not have that kind of attitude because leaders are being a role model to others. The writer said that Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz and Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi are lack of empathy. Empathy can be defines as the ability to understand or feel another person’s feeling as if they were your own or empathy is the experience of understanding another person's condition from their perspective. From the article, it shows leaders lack of empathy on the issue of BR1M. the emphatic skills in leadership is important. In recently published book, Wired to Care, innovation strategist Dev Patnaik explains that “without personal connection to the people they serve, companies lack the context, immediacy or experience they need to make good decisions. Without that empathy, organizations can start to lose their way a little bit at a time.” It means that, they need to know how to interact and understand others feeling too if not they might be comes out with nonsense statement. Like in the article which stated by the writer that the leader labeled the recipients of BR1M as the stupid people. The word hurt a lot of people. Leaders should not said such things because it just shown a bad attitudes as a respectful person in the country and political field.

Besides, PAS spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had been drawing flak from the people for likening BR1Mrecipients to farm animals; chickens, cows being fed desiccated coconut and hay respectively. They need to use our reasoning ability to understand another person's thoughts, feelings, reactions, concerns, motives. This means they must truly making an effort to stop and think for a moment about the other person's perspective in order to begin to understand where they are coming from. Don’t simply said what they want to said. They must to remember their position and care about their supporters too. Being a leader means they are being a role model to others, so showing an excellent manners  while making decision or saying something on the issue discussed. Both of them, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz and Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi should know that what they have done is wrong and they cannot use offensive words in media or to public. They need to consider and care others feelings and perspective too. The BR1M actually helping the one who is in needed and who is not live in a lot of wealth. Many words used by them are offensive and they also saying bad things about Malaysian. That is not example of a good leader. Hence, from all of the statement and what is saying by me is not to make anyone angry or offended. It is just my opinion and from what I am understands.  I ask for forgiveness to all of you if there is something wrong with my statement and my entry this time. Nevertheless, the empathy is important in leadership or also important for us. We should understand others feeling too not just thinking of ourselves. People have different perspective and thoughts, so let’s respect their perspective and thoughts.

Dire need for English to be a must –pass subject

Assalamualaikum. Hye. Hello.

Can I ask you something? Do you think English is important nowadays? Okay, before that this is my third entry. The topic is “Dire need for English to be a must –pass subject”.  I agree with this new implementation made by Education’s Ministry to students who take Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).  

From my views, I think that this is the good idea because everyone already knows that English is important. Parents and most students are also giving the thumbs up for the Education Ministry’s proposal to make English a must-pass subject in SPM. English is an international language which used by all people in the world. Yes, I also agree with the statement in the news which said that this is the crucial move, so teachers must be trained, well prepared and facilities improved before any changes made.

Not all of students are good in English, so before implementing it, government must prepare all the things in order to improve the mastery of the language among students in a right direction. In every school, well train teachers have to be taken to ensure students more understand while learning English. Maybe, they can make a teaching English program which they import a teacher from oversea to teach at school for 3 or 4 months. This also can help students more easy to learn English with the expert imported teacher.

Moreover, facilities must be improved especially in the rural areas. Usually, there are lacks of facilities in teaching English in rural areas. So, government should provide more facilities so that it gives ease to teachers and student in learning and teaching process.  One more thing is, teachers for rural areas need to have different kind of training to help them tackle the problem faced by students there as parents and students did not too understand and see the importance of mastering English. They must be given an extra attention.

English is important for the future as there are lot of this language used in universities, colleges, assignments and course of works. So, by mastering English they can more understand and easy to do their work. In the news, there is statement which said that “the world has become so competitive that it has become necessity to have a good command of the language.” Yes, it right. There are lot of people who are master in the language nowadays, so the competition are high for them to further their study or apply for a job. This move to make sure all students aware of the importance of English and make sure Malaysian students are on par with the global community.

Making English a must-pass subject is not enough to make them expert and master in using the language. Students must be trained well by apply the English language in their daily live like communicate in English while in class, with peers and teachers and also in activities. It can help them improve in mastering English and have a better international communication. Like me, I am not so good in communicate in English, but i will try my best as I am English student.

This is not a threat to our culture and national identity, Bahasa Malaysia but it just help us in global economy and help in future. So, mastering English is importance for us but don’t forget to the importance of our national language. Equal importance should be given to both languages.

Stereotyping

Assalamualaikum…  Hello people! Lets read this.

This is the second entry for critical literacy blog which titled “Stereotyping is exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system. They go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis. However, it is also something that most people find difficult to avoid from doing.” So, let’s explore your sense of tendency to make generalizations by expanding the following statement: 

Women shouldn’t be behind the wheel…

The definition of stereotype is characteristics ascribed to groups of people involving gender, race, national origin and other factors that are not always true. People are use this nowadays and it is being their habit.

From the statement given, for me I strongly disagree with that statement. We usually stereotype women as people who should not get on behind the wheels because it is a man's job. For me women should be behind the wheel.  Men always think that women are weak and not so good in many things. This is the assumption of general from their first sight towards women. There are women behind men who are always helping each other in making the things success. In driving, men think that the one who is driving too slowly on the road is women not men even they did not see the driver. 

Do you realize something? If women know how to drive it will give ease to men too. For example, if a husband is so busy with his work and didn’t have time to bring his wife to clinic, market, send his children to school and others his wife can help him. Not all women drive cars in a same way, there are also women that expert in driving. People always think women bring the problems when driving. Women who have driving license also can help to rescue his family. If in her family didn’t have men, so women are responsible to help her family. They can’t only depend to her dad only. It means that women have right to drive.

Men didn’t allow women to drive because they think women are the worst driver. Most of them have the same thought. So, it’s a stereotype that always happened. People also said women drive too slow even on the highway. In addition, people think women always involved in accidents. You can’t say that thing if you don’t know the driver is men or women and who is wrong and who is right. Don’t simply assume the worst driver is women. People can’t judge that from a gender.

Women should have a driving license for their easiness. So, she does not always depend on other people to take her where she wants to go. Learning how to drive gives women the security of knowing that they can get behind the wheel when they in need. People can’t say that only women that have weakness in driving while men not. Actually, men also have weakness in driving. Yes, it is not fair to say that women are not allowed to drive a car. They also need it for their ease.

In a conclusion, the stereotype is a bad attitude that everyone already know about it. However, the habit is hard to stop. Like the example of the statement given which means that women are the worst driver. People like to judge others that they have a same character and attitude from the past experienced. They simply judge them without knowing them very well.  So, we must try to stop stereotype others.

Expectations Of CL

Topic 1: Expectations and Hope

Hello everyone! Now, I am in semester 4. There are few subjects in the new semester that are hard to me due to the lot of speaking, presentations and critical thinking compared to the last semester. This is my blog for Critical Literacy's subject. What is my expectation of this subject for the first time I heard the name of this subject of course I think that this subject is difficult enough. Well, the name of this subject itself is critical literacy, but I hope that I am not in the critical situation while learning this subject. I ever heard about this subject from my senior. They said that this subject can be hard and also can be easy if we are focus on reading.

Focus more on reading like my lecturer, Madam Zariati told me. I will think positive to make it easier for me to understand this subject. I have learned a bit about this subject in the first week. I found that this subject actually fun and we must to try to think creatively or think out of the box. I ever think too whether I can be a critical thinker or not, but it is doesn’t matter as long as I try harder and focus in this subject. After learned this subject I can improve more in the ways of thinking rational and being a good thinker. We need to use both of our brain and think deeply not just think the same thing that people always think. Try to be different than others. I hope that I can do my best in this subject since this subject doesn’t have final exam. I have to complete all the assignment successfully to get a good result for this subject. This subject is fun if we understand and always reading to make our brain active. Thinking out of the box is difficult for some people. Keep trying.
